JAMES RATLIFF GALLERY ARTIST PROFILE

"In my paintings like Sunrising Grand Canyon ..... I want to show the power of these huge walls that can surround us and make us feel so small. And the idea behind paintings such as Vibrant Arizona I and Arizona II is to show the vibrations of color which life creates for it's own survival. New life which springs into desert landscapes after spring rains is vibrant color coming from dust - is the spirit of the desert revealed."

In choosing a site or architecturally interesting subject to paint, artist Greg Heil likes contrasts which come from sky and clouds, flowing water and the solidity of rocks, neighboring plants of various shapes and colors, and the shadows cast at certain times of day. The magic is in how these images draw you to them by their realism coupled with an element of fantasy.

Greg Heil describes his work as bridging the gap between abstraction, expressionism and traditional plein-air painting. The formal structure of his work yields to his expressive use of color and the magic is in how these images draw you to them by their realism coupled with an element of fantasy.
